Resident in Counseling
Virginia Doherty is an LPC-Resident in Counseling with a passion for helping people of all ages navigate life’s challenges and achieve emotional well-being. Holding a Master of Arts (MA) in School Counseling from the University of Denver and a post Master’s Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from Lamar University, she is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based support to her clients as they explore their identities, overcome obstacles, and develop skills for a brighter future.
With a flexible approach to counseling, Virginia integrates a variety of theoretical orientations, including person-centered, solution-focused, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and motivational interviewing (MI). This allows for a tailored therapeutic experience that meets each client’s unique needs. She believes in the power of person-centered therapy to create a safe, empathetic environment where young clients feel understood and empowered to express themselves. This approach is complemented by solution-focused techniques that encourage clients to recognize their strengths and work toward practical goals.
For clients dealing with anxiety, depression, or self-esteem issues, Virginia often incorporates CBT to help them identify and reframe negative thought patterns, fostering healthier thinking and coping mechanisms. Additionally, motivational interviewing is used to support adolescents and teens who may be struggling with ambivalence toward change, helping them clarify their values and find the motivation to make positive shifts in their lives.
Having worked as an elementary school counselor in Fairfax County Public Schools, Virginia has experience with a wide range of issues including academic stress, peer relationships, identity development, and family dynamics. She also believes in families collaborating with their child’s schools when appropriate, ensuring that progress is supported both in and outside of therapy. Virginia is committed to creating a warm and inclusive space where every young client feels seen, heard, and supported on their journey toward personal growth and resilience.
