Jimmy Nguyen, M.Ed

Resident in Counseling

Jimmy received his M.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the College of William & Mary in 2023. As a second-generation Vietnamese-American and native to northern Virginia, he moved to and lived in Japan for 11 years after graduating from the University of Washington with a B.A. in Japanese and linguistics. These experiences have afforded him a unique international lens and a passion for multicultural issues.

While working as an intern in the Talley Center for Counseling Services at the University of Mary Washington, Jimmy developed a therapeutic style that is influenced by person-centered, existential, strengths-based, solution-focused, and cognitive behavioral approaches. He worked with a variety of students, including those from the international, Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI), and LGBTQ+ communities, helping them through their concerns with social anxiety, depression, adjustment to college life, relationships, academic achievement, self-confidence, perfectionism, loneliness, life goals, motivation, meaning and purpose, emotional distress, and crisis management.

Now a registered Resident in Counseling in Virginia, Jimmy continues to work from a humanistic, strengths-based, and existential orientation while also incorporating concepts from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, self-compassion, and motivational interviewing to help clients through adjustment issues, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, drug abuse, LGBTQ+ issues, cultural identity issues, distress tolerance, lack of motivation, and pressures from family and society. He strives to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients to freely explore and express their concerns. Jimmy believes in working collaboratively with clients to develop achievable goals, to accomplish sustainable growth and change, to acquire healthy skills for optimal living, and to foster fulfilling relationships.
